Controller – Remote-based, Pre-IPO Biotech/Stock Options, Proven Leadership Team: RETAINED SEARCH

Cornerstone has been Retained by a Pre-IPO Biotech with a leadership team that has an impressive and proven track record within the Virology/Infectious Disease space.  Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will have ownership for all financial and accounting activities across the pre-IPO Biotech as they move into the public sector imminently.

LOCATION: This position is remote based with a strong preference for someone located on the East Coast.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all financial and accounting activities including monthly, quarterly, annual reporting
  • Ensure that the company’s accounting procedures and reported results conform to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Responsible for the day-to-day accounting including preparation and/or review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis.
  • Lead all aspects of accounting including accounts payable, general ledger, tax, and payroll
  • Oversee the purchasing to payables process.
  • Preparation of schedules used in the monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting, including, internal financial statements, 10-Q’s, and annual 10-K filings.
  • Support the implementation and operationalization of R&D collaborations and various complex business transactions.
  • Preparation of schedules to support budget to actual reporting and related variance analysis.
  • Assist with maintenance of the Company’s capitalization table.
  • Assist the CFO with Board-level and management reports.
  • Lead ERP and equity management systems implementation.
  • Lead preparation of financial updates, analysis, and board content for the leadership team, Board of Directors, and investors.
  • Manage the audit activities in partnership with external auditors.
  • Oversee the preparation of all federal and state tax reporting obligations.
  • Coordinates the timely filing of the Company tax returns prepared by outside tax advisors and ensures proper maintenance of accounting records and documentation in compliance with statutory requirements and Company policies.
  • Oversees company sub-contractors, consultants and vendors relative to invoices, purchase orders and certificates of insurance.
  • Oversee the management of leases, contracts, consulting agreements, as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Company’s accounting, procurement and T&E related systems.
  • Support general administrative projects in IT and HR as needed.
  • Prior experience in a public company preferred.
  • Prior experience in a cross functional team environment preferred
  • Prior experience with systems implementations preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Accounting, Finance or related field is required.
  • CPA and public accounting experience preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate and/or general accounting and reporting.
  • Prior experience with GAAP, public company rules and regulations, regulatory accounting and reporting requirements.
  • An understanding of Sarbanes Oxley 404 compliance.
  • Appreciation for procedure, process and operational excellence.
